Ventilated mattress vent

The following is a design for a new or a retrofitted mattress to facilitate a proper thermal exchange. The the apparatus consists of a vertical tube attached to the surface of the mattress on one end. The other end of the tube is loosely connected to an airflow source such as a radial fan. As the mattress surface bends a compresses downward, the attached tube also moves in the same direction. The air source is attached to the other end of the tube by a non-rigid bond, such as rubber or silicone, to absorb the vibration. The top of the tube is either completely open or covered by an air permeable membrane.

  • The design allows for to alter an existing mattress.
  • The design allows for a non-uniform cooling of a sleeping surface covered by a sheet.

Most patents out there are fucking clueless on this topic. They obviously were not drafted by the fellow sufferers. People are out there just to make money. I am not.

The process

Make sure you have a mattress platform base
Find your hot spot. Only one for now
Prepare the air chamber
Attach the radial fan to the chamber
Make the hole in the mattress and in the topper
Attach the air chamber to the mattress hole
Cover the hole in the topper. Or not

Make sure you have a mattress platform base

The air vent tailpipe needs to move freely beyond the bed frame. This makes the use of the box spring a little awkward because you will need to punch two holes in it also. Too much work. Just get a platform instead. The platform should have gaps to fit the tailpipe though. Something like this:


Find your hot spot

Hopefully, you already know which part of the body gets uncomfortable. It’s likely your chest or groin area. You can start by creating one vent, it’s possible that you only need one to be comfortable. Take a permanent marker and mark the spot!


Prepare the vent, or air chamber – PVC tailpipe

I use pliers holing a red hot nail poke about 4 to 6 holes, equally spaced, around the neck of the PVC pipe.  These holes will be used to hold the thread that is sewn into the top of the mattress. The PVC Flanged Tailpiece can be substituted for any other plastic or rubber pipe. The length should be about 12 inches, or longer if your mattress is 12 inches. A piece of rubber hose would also work.

Attach the radial fan to the chamber

You should buy a few radial fans from various vendors. Because you are creating a customized environment you need a few choices to experiment with. These little fans are very important for the proper operation. The goal is to end up with a silent design, where you only hear the air flowing in the air chamber (PVC pipe). This is definitely possible with 12v fan going of 5v power supply.

  • The 12v fan on a 5v USB source only produces a weak flow. This is enough for me, but you may want something stronger. So buy some extra 5v fans to experiment with
  • All of these fans have different noise levels, sound frequency, and some even have a noticeable vibration
  • These 50mm fans are very cheap. As little as under $2 from AliExpress
  • Usually, the smaller the fan the noisier it is. Try avoiding very compact designs

I am not suggesting any particular brand, but these fans look like this.

The wiring of the fan to the 5v USB power supply is very easy. I did not bother with proper terminal connections between the power supply and the fan. I just cut off the connectors on both wires and reconnected them. Red wire to red wire. Black wire to black wire. Use a very long USB cable, or the USB C cable. Cut off the head, find red and black wires and strip them. Do the same on the fan and connect these wires. Isolate with electric tape.

Now we just need a few rubber bands and a mounting tape. The fan will be pulled down by the gravity.
The goal here is to make this connection loose, as opposed to rigid.

  • Soft parts will serve as vibration damper. So that your butt does not vibrate along with the fan. You will feel no vibration
  • In the event of a someone jumping the mattress the radial fan should just fold to the side as opposed to just pushing back at the jumper

Use a soft mounting tape or silicone to connect the fan to the pipe. Duck tape is okay as a test, but it will wear out fan will end up on the floor.

Now test this vent for air flow and more importantly for any whistling noise it may produce. You now have air blowing into a pipe. It’s a recipe for musical instrument which we are not building. You can stop the noise by stuffing something inside pipe to stop air from bouncing against walls. A 10ppi or 20ppi filter foam will do the trick, but you can just insert a piece of cardboard along the inside of the pipe. You may not have this wind noise problem. Just be ready to deal with it.


Make the hole in the mattress and in the topper

Once again, a bonnell mattress (inner spring) is best (well under $100 for twin), but your current mattress is most likely an insulated coil type of mattress or a memory foam mattress. Use sharp scissors to cut a hole atop of an individual spring that you have earlier identified as a hot spot. Cut the top material. Once that is done there will be lots of stuff coming out like pieces of polyester padding (nasty stuff) or tarp. Keep cutting though it, removing some of it, just enough to fit your PVC tailpipe that you’ve assembled earlier. Once you see the inside of the coil – use the flashlight to see take a long stick, possibly with something sharp at the other end and poke into this hole. It should make a dent on the other end. If your mattress is single sided it will be easier to make a hole on the other end, otherwise it will be the same effort of removing polyester and other crap.

Tip: The coil may get a little lose because you are removing some of the material that holds it in place. It’s not a problem. Do not remove the coil itself.

Attach the mattress top to the PVC vent contraption

Once you have managed to make the hole wide enough to fit a 1.5 inch PVC pipe snugly drive the pipe in. Top to bottom or bottom to top, whichever is easier. Thread the top of the mattress fabric to the flanged tip of the PVC pipe or either side of the pipe if you are using a rubber hose. This is the only place where the pipe is attached to the mattress. You can use a regular thread and a needle, or a heavy duty hand sewing needles.

The hole should be sank about 1/2 inch below the surface – you can control that with the length of the threads. If it’s any higher there is a chance that you will be feeling the plastic.


Cover the hole in the topper. Or not

You may have already adjusted the surface layout to fit your body needs. If you have removed some foam from the topper you may or may not need to refill it with something that is air permeable, already described here. Or it’s possible that you are already done and nothing else is needed. Sleep on it. Make sure you only have a bed sheet on top of this hole. No mattress cover.


Did it work?

You should feel temperature improvement right away. If you are feeling the air flow as soon as you laying down, it’s likely that there is too much of it. You should not be feeling the flow at all. Only the cooling effect. There is barely any flow in a 12v fan so it’s not likely to be a problem with 12v fan. But if you are using a 5v fan you can use a 20ppi 30ppi cover to reduce the flow.

At this point you have a full time fan plugged in. It does not draw too much electricity, but perhaps you want to turn it off. I use a simple outlet remote control to drive the USB power supply. Link. You can use the same remote to drive other outlets – perhaps a lamp.
